Podere Gli Oppi Villa Tuscany
Tuscan villa Podere Gli Oppi is a large and well equipped medieval farmhouse on 3 levels, located southeast of Siena and sleeps 14 people with 7 bedrooms plus 5 baths, a pool and a garden. This fully restored Tuscany rental villa is sheltered by wooded surroundings near the village of Trequanda, and about a 30 mile drive from Siena and Arezzo. The house protects a large courtyard beyond which are gardens, outdoor living areas, a pool and an olive grove. This country home caters to all needs with big fireplaces, entertainment (wi-fi, hi-fi, sat-TV) in 3 sitting rooms and the big dining room and modern kitchen. Having all this space and 2 master bedrooms makes this house the ideal vacation retreat for 2 families or a group of friends.
The courtyard at Villa Podere Gli Oppi
On the south side of the house is a courtyard with a very large table seating 15 or more and shaded from May on by a pergola formed by grapevines. At any season of the year people use this secluded place to have lunch or dinner and cook on the big BBQ. This courtyard which measures about 700 sq ft, has 2 gates, one to entry from parking, and the other to a terrace with a long table that lends itself perfectly to endless meals, discussions, playing games and gazing at the panoramic views. From here you can walk to the swimming pool which is on a sunny lower terrace and to the garden and olive grove.
The olive grove
On the entry side of the house is the olive grove with dozens of century old olive trees from which the owners produce superb olive oil. Here you find several seating corners to enjoy a relaxing time, read or have a nap. When you walk about 150 yards or so through the olive grove you reach the fence on the western end of the estate behind which is the small tar road on which you came from Trequanda. On the other side of that sparsely used road is a big forest for hikers with many deer, and other animals and birds. In the olive grove is plenty of room to play sports.
The Villa Pool
Just south of the house and courtyard there are some terraces with fig trees and lots of flowers. An old staircase leads you down to the pool area which is completely surrounded by flowers, plants and low trees providing you with maximum privacy. The pool is 18 by 5 meters and you can either walk in slowly, take the pool stairs or dive it at 1 end where the pool is more than 2.5 meters deep. By the end of the pool is another pergola so that you sit in the sun or the shade. There are lights in and around the pool for night swimming although the clear skies with millions of stars may be providing more romantic light. After a swim you can take a nice shower by the side of the pool and you can also decide to listen to music on the small hifi set there.
Villa Ground Floor
Let us start on the ground floor although on entering the courtyard there is an inviting wide, covered staircase leading to a terrace on the upper floor. Probably you will enter Gli Oppi through the old blue wooden door to the 60m2 kitchen and dining area. There you will see a massive antique table which seats easily 12 people or more. The kitchen is completely equipped with 2 refrigerators, dishwasher and gas heated stove with a big oven and grill and all the pans, plates etc etc. From the kitchen you can walk into a room which is a “semi office” equipped with PC and printer (in and around the house is WiFi), while there is also a sofa bed that sleeps 2 if you are staying at the house with more than 16 people. Next to the this room is a large suite which consists of a sleeping part with a HD TV and CD+DVD, a desk to work at and a sitting corner around a fireplace. This room is some 50 m2. It was restored completely in 2010 when floor heating was installed at the time when the entire heating and electricity of the house was renewed. This room has an adjoining spa bathroom with old Etruscan period tiles and washbasin as well as a huge bathtub and shower and all other amenities.
You can reach the middle floor either by climbing the outdoor staircase and then entering into the main living room or by taking the indoor stairs from the semi office to the so-called TV room. Let us take the outdoor steps which lead to a typical old Tuscan style, covered terrace from which you have a great view over the rolling hills of Southern Tuscany. Go through the double doors into the main living room where you can sit with 10 or more around a very big fireplace (there is an ample supply of wood). From 3 big windows you get a great view all the way to Cortona at a distance of some 20 kilometers, while listening to music on the CD/HiFi set. Behind the big living room is a lovely bedroom with windows to 2 sides and an adjoining sizable bathroom. In this bedroom is another TV and CD+DVD installation and a great collection of films and cd’s. Next to the main living room you find the TV room, with a big TV screen and DVD as well as Video. You can watch many satellite TV programs or movies from our extensive house collection. Next to the TV room are 2 double bedrooms and 2 fully equipped adjoining bathrooms. So on this floor, which was also largely redone in 2010, there is a combination of living rooms, 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The walls are so thick, as you would expect in a 14th century mansion that there is no need for air conditioning. And then you will find in the main living room a door to a staircase leading up to the top floor.
When you walk up the staircase you will find a group of 3 double bedrooms, a small study and a bathroom. Here a further 6 persons can sleep and when they look out of their windows they have the best view of all. The study is sometimes used as a spare room for a child. Throughout the house there is central heating and all the rooms have nice wooden shutters protecting the house from the weather.
Apart from the main house, there are 4 extensions namely the old bread and pizza oven, a garage and shed of similar size (with several bikes for the adventurous), a separate extension in which there is a further bathroom as well as a washer and a dryer, and finally a shed closing in the courtyard and made into a large bedroom with a sleeping corner and entertainment area with another set of TV, CD and DVD. Here 2 people can sleep and if wanted there is space for 2 further small beds for children. In this last extension which was constructed “only” 100 years ago, there is air conditioning because the walls are less thick.
From this Tuscany rental villa and its gardens views for many miles can be enjoyed. At a 5-minute drive is the village Trequanda with shops and restaurants. At 30 minutes are the cities of Siena, Arezzo, Cortona and Montepulciano, while Florence and Orvieto are 1 hour and Rome is just over 2 hours away. Exit of the Autostrada A1 and the local railway station are both just 15 minute drive away from this country estate. Tennis, soccer, swimming, cycling, hiking and golf can be done on or very close to this. Housekeeper and gardener are there to make life easy. Numerous good Italian restaurants are close the house. Podere Gli Oppi is child friendly, pet friendly, and also wheelchair friendly on the ground level. There’s plenty of parking for several cars along the access drive. From here you can easily make day-trips to Bologna, Florence, Pisa, Lucca, and Perugia. Also close are the best spa resorts of Tuscany for further relaxation. And for your comfort, the 1 meter thick walls make this house nice and cool in the summer, and warm in the winter.
