This marvelous villa occupies a gently sloping site facing west across the fertile Orcia Valley towards the majestic Amiata Mountain. Sheltered to the east by a woodland and surrounded by well-tended gardens, the property includes several acres of vineyards and olive groves on this warm and private hillside.
From the villa and the pool we admire the spellbinding panoramic views over the varied landscape dotted by farms, villages and hill towns. The Orcia Valley and the town of Pienza are both UNESCO world heritage areas – Pienza is also visible from the villa. Pienza has a unique renaissance town plan and a magnificent palace built for the Pope Pius II, who was born here. This town was his summer residence in the 1460’s. Closer to Manafiore, just 1 mile away is the small village of Monticchiello, with its walls and towers surviving the events of centuries. In this village are 3 restaurants and a cafe, also a small grocer, ATM and a few shops.
The ground floor of Villa Manafiore is centered around a large L-shaped sitting room with working fire-place, sofas and arm chairs. The entrance hall has a guest powder-room toilet. The dining room is set with a table that seats ten people. Directly outside the dining room is a pergola-covered terrace with a table and views down the valley. The villa is served by a fully equipped kitchen with a pantry and access to the courtyard and the covered outside dining by the pool. The billiards room is the hub for the 2 additional bedrooms, one is a simple twin bedroom with a shower-bathroom, while the other bedroom has a single bed and also its own shower-bathroom. By the billiards room is also a splendidly appointed laundry room with washed and dryer, ironing board, and a well stocked linen closet.
The upper floor is anchored by a generous sitting room with a fireplace. There’s a kitchenette for drinks, coffee and breakfast. The 2 master bedrooms come with fireplaces, dressing rooms (one with a sofabed) and baths with a tub and separate walk-in shower. The 3rd bedroom has 2 wide single beds and a shower in the bathroom. The 4th bedroom on this floor is a double bedroom, also with a shower in the bathroom.
The courtyard garden is paved with stone and has numerous terra cotta pots with flowering and aromatic plants. Open to the courtyard is a wide covered patio with a brick pizza-oven and a BBQ grill. The alcove facing the pool is made into a sheltered dining area with a table and chairs for 10 people. The swimming pool is 60 ft x 12 ft (18 x 4 meters) with a seating ledge underwater. Chaise lounges are lined along the poolside and at the end of the pool is another pergola-covered dining area. The pool water can be heated at extra cost.
The origins of this structure go all the way back to the 9th century when it was built as a watch tower overlooking the pilgrim roads down the valley. It was added on over the centuries, and by the 1950’s it still housed several farming families. Then the building remained empty for a few decades and turned into a ruin, until 1989 when the current owner rescued it and brought it back to life with an extensive rebuilding project using mainly traditional materials.
