Trattoria Latte di Luna in Pienza, Tuscany
Latte di Luna is our favorite restaurant in Pienza for delicious local cooking. This is the perfect place to eat the original pasta of this area, the homemade pici = hand-rolled spaghetti. You would usually have it with ragu or with aglione, the garlic-tomato sauce. Last time I tried the gnocchi instead of pici, and they were wonderfully light and tasty little lumps. Starters include the typical crostini and cold-cut cured meets, while the mains include superb steaks (filetto), sausages and some days also rabbit and duck. But they are best known for the maialino = roasted suckling pig. This is the house specialty. You need to leave a little room for their delicious homemade semifreddo ice cream that comes in a few different flavours. I personally think the orange semifreddo is outstanding. Friendly service and hospitality are provided by the owners Roberto, Enrica and their extended family. Enrica is now cooking with her mother in the kitchen. Closed Tuesdays and usually the month of July when they take the kids to the beach!
Inside seating is in 3 rooms, but if the weather allows, always aim for the terrace. It’s very pleasant to have lunch or dinner on this triangular area protected from the sun by the wide umbrellas that cover the entire terrace. You must reserve a table well in advance; you’d be amazed by the number of people who try but can’t get in without a reservation. This place is always full during the summer and on weekends throughout the year. Last visit June 2016. Via San Carlo 2, east end of main street in Pienza, on the little square just inside the gate.
